THE FLOOR MADE FROM A CLAY, DUNG AND SAWDUST
This project included:
1) making a clay floor for the kitchen,
2) sanding and oiling an old wooden floor
3) making a flour and chalk paint, for the walls.
The hardest part was making the clay floor because, in the beginning, there were only wooden floor joists. To achieve a strong floor base, we put wooden battens across the joists (like ribs), woodshavings and cement board over these ribs, and then we used a wooden frame (shown in the photo).
The floor had to be lightweight. We mixed clay with plenty of sawdust for the 1st layer and clay with sand for second one. We used linseed oil to make the whole surface waterproof.
The flat owners enjoyed getting involved in project. They dug clay from the local countryside and helped with making paint and painting.
